Thomas N. Carruthers, III, CCIM

Tom Carruthers is a Principal Owner and serves as President of Red Rock Realty Group. Tom began his real estate career in 1986 with Porter, White & Company where he worked for 16 years, gaining experience in investments, development, brokerage and industrial site selection. He formed Carruthers Real Estate Company in 2001 and then, in partnership with Charles Robinson, acquired Property Managers, Inc. in 2007. Later in 2010, Tom and Charles merged their two companies, renaming it Red Rock Realty Group. Tom and Charles recruited Tommy Joyce to join them as a partner in 2016 to manage and grow Red Rock’s property management division. The threesome then invited Jack Little to become a partner in 2020 to manage and grow the commercial brokerage division.

In 2011, Tom, Charles and two other commercial real estate executives acquired LAH Sotheby’s International Realty, one of the largest locally owned residential real estate companies in Alabama.  Red Rock Realty Group and LAH Sotheby’s are operated as separate entities but enjoy working together. In 2024 LAH Sotheby’s acquired a majority interest in Kaiser Sotheby’s International Realty, which has offices in Gulf Shores and Fairhope, Alabama.

In his spare time, Tom enjoys serving on various not-for-profit boards and volunteering his time with Rotary Club projects. He also enjoys backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, skiing and travel of any kind. Tom has climbed fourteen mountains over 10,000 feet in elevation including Aconcogua (22,834’), Pico de Orizaba (18,702’), Mt. Ranier (14,410’) and Grant Teton (13,370’), and has had failed attempts at more than one, including Mt. McKinley and Popocatepetl. Tom and his wife Brooke have two daughters, Scout and Neely.

Career Highlights

  • Tom represented LTV Steel, British Steel and Sumitomo Metal Industries in the industrial site selection for what became Trico Steel in Decatur, Alabama (now owned by Nucor Steel)
  • Tom represented Honda Motor Company in the industrial site selection for its Lincoln, Alabama assembly plant.
  • Tom and various investors acquired and, using the Historic Tax Credit, redeveloped the Burger-Phillips Building in downtown Birmingham, Alabama into 35 residential loft apartments and then later converted the apartments to condominiums and sold them all.
  • Tom and various investors acquired a 48,000 square foot office building in Vestavia Hills, Alabama and managed and leased it successfully for many years.
  • Tom has represented Fortune 500 companies including Alabama Power Company, Bank of America, Healthsouth Corp. (now Encompass), Honda Motor Company, J.P. Morgan, Norfolk Southern Railroad, Northrop Grumman Corp., Regions Bank and TRW, Inc.
  • Tom has represented institutions and not-for-profits including Baptist Health System, Cahaba River Society, Childcare Resources, Gateway, Samford University, United Way and University of Alabama at Birmingham.
